Understanding the cost of producing an egg
Knowing the cost of producing an egg is essential for setting a fair selling price and determining whether your operation is profitable. This cost depends on three main factors: the number of hens, their laying rate, and the price of feed — which alone accounts for 60 to 70% of the total cost.

How is this cost calculated?
The calculation multiplies the number of hens by their daily feed consumption to get the total quantity consumed, then multiplies by the price of feed per kilogram. Your other daily costs (bedding, energy, veterinary care) are then added. This total is divided by the number of eggs laid each day — derived from the laying rate — to give the cost per egg.
How to reduce your egg production costs
