Jardiland, Gamm Vert or local breeder: where to buy laying hens at the best price?

Why choosing the right source for buying laying hens matters?
Getting into laying hen farming is a wonderful adventure, whether you're a gardening enthusiast or a small producer selling through local circuits. But before you see fresh eggs in your basket, you first need to find healthy poultry, suited to your environment and purchased at a fair price. Three options are available to you: large garden centres such as Jardiland or Gamm Vert, or a local farmer. Let's take a closer look together.
Buying laying hens from specialised large-scale retailers (Jardiland, Gamm Vert...)
Retailers like Jardiland or Gamm Vert sell laying hens, mainly in spring and summer. The advantage? Convenience: you can buy your hens at the same time as your feed, feeders or henhouse. Prices generally range from 8 to 15 euros per hen depending on the breed and the time of year.
On the other hand, these hens often come from large industrial breeders, with little traceability regarding their rearing conditions. The variety of breeds is limited, and personalised advice can sometimes be lacking. If a hen falls ill shortly after purchase, recourse can be complicated.
Trusting a local breeder: the best value for money?
Buying laying hens directly from a local breeder means choosing transparency and proximity. You can visit the farm, observe the rearing conditions, ask all your questions and choose from breeds that are often better suited to outdoor life: Marans, Sussex, Golden Gauloise, Leghorn...
The price may seem slightly higher (between 10 and 20 euros per hen), but you benefit from robust animals, accustomed to farmyard life, often already vaccinated and dewormed. The local breeder also gives you valuable advice on feeding, flock management and health prevention. It is a truly worthwhile investment in the long run.
Poultry fairs and private small ads
A third option exists: poultry fairs, agricultural shows or peer-to-peer platforms (Le Bon Coin, specialist Facebook groups). Prices there are often attractive, sometimes below 8 euros per hen. But beware: the animals' health is not guaranteed and the risk of disease (mycoplasmosis, coccidiosis) is higher when the origin is unknown.
Our advice for making the right choice
For a beginner looking for 3 to 5 laying hens for family consumption, Gamm Vert or Jardiland can serve as an occasional solution. But for a serious farming project, even on a small scale, the local breeder remains the best option. The quality of the animals, the human support and the traceability are well worth the difference in price. Look for breeders near you through local farming networks, CIVAM organisations or producers' markets in your area.
A good start for your hens means guaranteed fresh eggs all year round!
